Winter Pet Safety

In colder weather, remember to care for your pets.

In this video, Dr. Paul Demars discusses how to keep your pets safe and healthy during the winter.

Keeping your pet safe in cold conditions:

  • Pay attention to changing weather conditions like high winds and moisture. Keep animals dry and warm. Provide a good waterproof shelter for them.

  • For hunting or working dogs, give them plenty of breaks. Provide them with food and water to recharge, and use insulated vests to keep them warm.

  • Manage chemicals used during the winter. Antifreeze is toxic to dogs, so find a safe storage space for it. Clean the animal’s feet after walking across chemicals like road salts.

  • If your indoor pet has been playing in the snow, dry them off when they come inside.
